Skype Hypnotherapy

THP also offer Hypnotherapy sessions by Skype.

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions from our clients:

DO YOU ONLY PROVIDE SKYPE HYPNOTHERAPY IN THE UK?

THP Skype hypnotherapy service is available globally.

WHAT IS SKYPE HYPNOTHERAPY?

Skype hypnotherapy is a way of obtaining help from a qualified hypnotherapist without leaving your home. Instead the sessions take place online (over the internet).

Face to face hypnotherapy works very well but sometimes people are not able or do not wish to undertake this type of therapy for many varied reasons.

I use Skype (www.skype.uk.com) for live sessions.

WHAT IS SKYPE?

Skype is a free, high quality video conferencing program that allows us to see and hear each other using your computer and a webcam and microphone. It also allows text. Skype is free to download off the internet, easy to install and set up, is free of adware/malware/spyware, and most importantly is confidential. Skype is a “Live” medium that we will communicate in real time. Some people prefer this medium as it more in line with face to face therapy.

Skype is very easy to download and use. You can download Skype from www.Skype.co.uk. If you are not very confident with downloading I recommend you look at the following site which has a good tutorial on how to do it although Skype also provide very clear instructions. www.teachertrainingvideos.com/skype/index.html.

HOW DOES SKYPE HYPNOTHERAPY WORK?

Once we have agreed to work together via Skype and you have returned the agreement form to me and made your payment, you should then send me details in an email of your Skype address.

I will then invite you to be a “contact” through Skype. (How to accept this is clearly explained in the Skype tutorial above (or if you still have difficulty please just contact me via email and I will take you through the process). We will agree when we are to be in contact.

Consultations by Skype is for one hour weekly at a time agreed between ourselves. Usually it is the same time each week.

WHAT IS LIVE SKYPE VOICE?

Skype voice is like being on a telephone but on the computer. It is also free. You will need a microphone and headset unless your computer has built in facilities.

WHAT IS LIVE SKYPE VOICE AND USING A WEBCAM?

Skype voice & webcam is my preferred option if a client does not want to attend face to face therapy, as both the therapist and the client can gain a lot more information than just by text or voice. You will need a microphone, headset and webcam unless your computer has built in facilities.

We will agree when we are to be in contact. Sessions by Skype voice & webcam is for one hour weekly at a time agreed between ourselves. Usually it is the same time each week. At the prearranged time I will contact you via Skype and we will conduct the session. Again I would ask you to bear in mind that at all times our communications are confidential and should be treated as such and not shared with any third party.

Skype hypnotherapy by voice/webcam is, in my opinion, the best option for dealing with all issues where a client decides that face to face hypnotherapy is not an option for a variety of reasons.

WHAT ABOUT TECHNICAL ISSUES?

When dealing with technology, unfortunately things can sometimes go wrong. Although in my experience these times are very few. However, if you were unable to get online you may wish to leave me a text or telephone message and I would do the same for you on the number you have provided.

HOW CAN YOU GUARANTEE CONFIDENTIALITY?

Online sessions are bound by the same code of ethics as face to face therapy in that both parties agree to keep the details discussed within a session confidential. As an ethical hypnotherapist I do attend supervision in order that I can give the best possible service to you. However this again is totally confidential and any details discussed would be anonymous. I follow the Guidelines for Good Practice for my professional body for which I am member.

Working online is a very secure medium, providing some basic rules are put into place before therapy starts. For instance it is not desirable to use a shared or work computer. However sometimes this may be unavoidable so if this is the case it is essential to take some of the precautions such as keeping all information on a separate USB drive preferably pass worded.

Consideration must also be given to the time and circumstances when you are making contact. It is not desirable if you are likely to be overlooked or disturbed – so ideally a secure and quiet environment should be sought. It is also worth bearing in mind that some employers do not approve of personal use of work computers.

WHAT ABOUT SECURITY?

At the end of our work together a paper record of our sessions will be stored securely for a period of 5 years in case you wish to return to therapy. After that time they will be destroyed by secure shredding. No electronic records will be stored after the close of therapy and in addition all files will be in pass worded files during our exchanges.

EXPLAIN MORE ABOUT THE CLIENT / THERAPIST AGREEMENT FORM:

Before online hypnotherapy can begin, we agree when and how it will take place. It is helpful that we agree our expectations about the timing of our sessions because we have to trust each other to respond when expected. We also need to have a back-up plan for a technology crash (the internet and computers are still not 100% effective all of the time) and any other emergency situation.

WHY DO WE HAVE TO HAVE AN AGREEMENT?

Online hypnotherapy has the same expectations as face to face therapy, such as the timing of contact, confidentiality, code of ethics, emergency contacts, holidays etc. It also has some additional ones like what happens in the case of technical difficulties, security on line, type of email exchanges, making payment etc.

Having an agreement makes it clear before we start not only of each other’s expectations and boundaries but provides you with the secure knowledge that, just like in a closed room, your communications are held securely and confidentially.

HOW MUCH WILL A SESSION COST, AND HOW DO I PAY?

Live session (60 minutes) – £60.00 per session

Or a pre-paid discounted package of sessions may be agreed (paid ahead in one payment).

At the initial consultation/enquiry we can discuss which we both feel is the most suitable and beneficial for you. You can pay by bank transfer or pay pal (details provided when you have made contact).

WHAT HAPPENS IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY DURING A SESSION?

In the event of an emergency arising whilst you are engaged in Skype therapy, I would discuss with you the appropriate support that you could access during this period.

If you found yourself in a major crisis and were considering serious self harm it would be vital to get immediate help. This could include you contacting your GP, or the emergency services.

You could also call the Samaritans.

TELL ME MORE ABOUT CONFIDENTIALITY:

Online sessions are bound by the same code of ethics as face to face therapy in that both parties agree to keep the details discussed within a session confidential.

As an ethical hypnotherapist I do attend supervision sessions in order that I can give the best possible service to you but any information discussed under supervision would be anonymous. I follow the Guidelines for Good Practice of the professional bodies of which I am a member.

There is however an exception to this in line with ethical practice. If, in exceptional circumstances I felt that either you or someone else were in danger or at risk of harm, whilst I would first attempt to discuss with you the possibility of breaking confidentiality, if the risk was serious enough I may have to break confidentiality.

EXPLAIN WHAT YOU MEAN BY ‘ETHICAL STANDARDS’:

I am a member of the National Council of Hypnotherapy under whose ethical guidelines I work. I am also a member of CNHC and also bound by their code of ethics, copies of which can be provided to you. I take your individual boundaries seriously and seek to work in the most ethical way.

CAN YOU EXPLAIN MORE ABOUT THE SESSIONS?

Online sessions last for 60 minutes. If for any reason I have to cancel a session I will aim to provide you with minimum 48 hours notice. Likewise I will expect you to give me minimum 48 hours notice if you are unable to attend. I reserve the right to charge for a missed session where no or insufficient notice is given. If it is an emergency or a technical issue, then we will agree to make contact at another time.

In addition you have a responsibility to attend online sessions without being highly intoxicated from either alcohol or substances. I reserve the right to cancel or end sessions early should this become apparent. I also reserve the right to charge a full rate for the session.

WHEN WOULD I NEED TO PAY?

Payment for sessions are payable in advance via bank transfer or Pay pal.

HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL I NEED AND HOW DO WE END THERAPY?

When therapy is open-ended it is important that ending therapy is not sudden so we will regularly review progress to help determine the duration of our work together.

HOW DO YOU KEEP RECORDS AND MAINTAIN TOTAL SECURITY?

All client materials are treated in complete confidence and are removed from my computer at the end of our work together. Electronic records are stored on a password protected memory stick and kept in a locked filing cabinet. No identifying names or material is retained on these records as client ID initials are used to replace such information.

It is not permissible to publicise the content of our exchanges or share them with a third party.

ARE YOU INSURED?

I hold both public liability and professional indemnity insurance.

WHAT IF I DID WISH TO MAKE A COMPLAINT?

Should you wish to make a complaint about the service you have been offered please contact my professional bodies under whose conditions and ethics I work. A list of these may be provided on request.

I want to proceed with Skype hypnotherapy. What should I do now?

If there is anything you are not sure about, please do ask, but if you are happy to proceed with Skype hypnotherapy, please do contact me by either phone, email or via the ‘contact’ page in this website.
